Team SA Marches with Pride: Reflections from the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics Opening Ceremony

2025 Summer Deaflympics Kick off

On 15 November 2025, the global spotlight turned to Tokyo as the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics officially opened at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium. For Team South Africa, the moment was filled with pride, unity, and national spirit as our athletes marched into the stadium waving the flag high in green and gold.

This year marks a historic milestone it is the first time Japan is hosting the Deaflympics, adding to the prestige of an already momentous occasion. Since the first edition held in Paris in 1924, the Deaflympics has grown significantly, with a record 3,081 athletes from around the world registered to compete in Tokyo.

The Opening Ceremony was attended by Their Imperial Highnesses Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, as well as Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, showcasing Japan’s commitment to global sporting inclusion. The event was officially declared open by ICSD President Adam Kosa.

Flag Bearers Reflect

Team South Africa’s presence was led by two remarkable athletes selected as flag bearers: Kate Allwood and Obakeng Tlhako.

Kate Allwood – Swimming, Western Cape

“It felt so surreal. Like a dream.”

Kate, just 17 years old, described the moment she carried the flag as something she had long envisioned:

“It is something I grew up watching on TV my whole life, the Olympics, the Paralympics, and the Deaflympics. I always wished I could be that person carrying the flag, but at the time it felt so far-fetched. Waving the flag was incredible. It truly felt like a dream.”

Looking ahead to the Games:

“I’m looking forward to meeting people from other countries and connecting as a team. We’ve already become such good friends. My aim is to take it seriously and enjoy every moment.”

Obakeng Tlhako – Athletics, North West

“The young athletes are looking up to us.”

Obakeng shared that his aspiration to be a flag bearer began years ago:

“I first saw someone carrying the flag when I was competing in Brazil, and I asked my friend how I could be one. I worked hard in my athletic career, and being chosen was a reward. It felt amazing, I was excited to represent South Africa.”

“I want to showcase our God-given talent and cheer on my teammates.”
