Tokyo, Japan – 17 November 2025
Today marked a high-energy and emotional day for Team South Africa as four of our athletes took on the Men’s and Women’s 100m heats at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics, held at the Komazawa Olympic Park.
Competing under the guidance of coach Jackson Malindi, the athletes, Karabo Moeletsi, Obakeng Tlhako, Aobakwe Mphahlele, and Nikysha Pieters, gave it their all on the track, proudly donning the green and gold.
Karabo Moeletsi Qualifies for the Semi-Finals
Among the highlights of the day was Karabo Moeletsi’s remarkable performance in Heat 4 of the men’s 100m. Clocking a time of 11.56 seconds, Karabo secured his spot in the semi-finals, scheduled for Tuesday, 18 November at 10:48 AM (JST) at the same venue.
Following his qualification, Karabo shared his thoughts:
“There was a challenge in the 100m, but I felt excited – even though I was nervous
because this is the first time I am participating in the Deaflympics. I worked hard, and I will continue to do that.”
When asked what keeps him going during this journey:
“My dream and my motivation is to win a gold medal.”
As he prepares for the semi-finals, Karabo delivered a humble yet powerful message to his supporters back home:
“I cannot promise that I will bring back a medal, but I promise to work hard. I am learning and gaining experience as a first-time Deaflympic athlete.”
Team Spirit and Dedication
Though Obakeng Tlhako, Aobakwe Mphahlele, and Nikysha Pieters did not advance, their determination and representation of South Africa remain commendable. Each of them showcased strength, grace, and sportsmanship on the world stage.
We continue to support Karabo as he steps onto the track once more flying the South African flag high.
